After ten years of teaching Genseiryu, Shukumine saw karate as uninspired and dead. He determined that the limitations of karate lay in its linearity. In 1965, he expanded his theories of motion beyond the confines of what could be considered karate and founded Taido.

Shukumine thought about how to make techniques more flexible and universal. Taido's movements offered many innovations: the addition of spinning and twisting movements, gymnastic maneuvers, speedy and effective footwork, and a changing body angle. The name Taido means "way of the body."

So what makes Taido different from karate? Taido techniques employ changes of the body's bearing in order to facilitate simultaneous defense and kicking techniques. Taido also emphasizes the use of footwork to take advantageous angles and distance to the opponent. This footwork is functionally connected to the body mechanics that launch each kick, punch, or other technique. Taido uses exciting body movement to create powerful strikes and determine the spatial relationship with the opponent.

Taido's thought process is based on appropriate responses to changing situations rather than preset algorithms of offensive maneuvers and defense. Taido's movements are also designed for promoting health and longevity.

Taido's original ideal was, and continues to be, the application of scientific thought and traditional values to the improvement of the martial arts. According to its founder, Taido's ultimate goal is to enable its practitioners to function at a high level in society.

There are five main rules in Taido. Keep your thoughts as clear and calm as the reflective surface of a mirror. This allows you to understand the reality of your environment. Hold yourself with dignity and you need never feel inferior. fill your spirit from the source of energy deep in your abdomen. With the right frame of mind you will never be threatened. The right methods will prevent you from being defeated.

Taido makes use of five types of body movements: vertical spinning movement, rising and falling jumping movement, dropping movement characterized by changing the body's axis, horizontal spinning movement, and rolling and tumbling movements.

These movements are followed by strikes, kicks, and other techniques. The last category, called "tentai," includes gymnastic movements, for instance back-flips, which makes Taido fun to watch. Taido has a unique kind of footwork, known as unsoku, as well as non-stepping locomotion, called unshin.

Competitions in Taido include Jissen, Hokei, and Tenkai, which is a pre-arranged fight between one "hero" and five opponents. In Tenkai the judges give scores to the teams in a similar manner as is done in figure skating.

Even after this explanation, unless you've actually experienced Taido, you probably still won't have any solid idea of what Taido is about. This is where some proper advice from a real professional can help. Over the past 3 years I've taken many lessons from my golf coach, and I'm putting down some of the best bits of the advice I've been given in a series of coaching articles. I'll start off with the most important of the lot - keep the ball moving forwards.

My coach told me that the vast majority of amateurs will waste most of their practice and playing time by trying to achieve the perfect swing, grip or stance. What he told me is very few amateurs - and not even that many professionals! - will ever be what could be called textbook golfers. For instance, there are so many elements that make up perfect technique - stance, grip, swing, follow through etc.

But above all this, if you can hit the ball the right way - ie forwards and towards the green - perfect technique is almost irrelevant to how well you'll play the game. My coach demonstrated the truth of this to me.

He took the club back in a swing that would make any amateur blush, even letting go of the club at the top of the swing. However, when he hit the ball, it travelled in the direction he was aiming, not especially quickly, but was definitely on target.

This showed me that the fundamental issue in golf is ensuring that the head of the club meets the ball in the right position to send the ball off in the right direction. Which is where I realised I should concentrate my initial efforts.

Obviously, the more control you have over the backswing and other elements, the more power you'll be able to get into the shot and thus hit the ball further. And your club selection is going to be important here, too, for getting more distance on the ball.

The main lesson I learnt from this, though, was that if you can get the ball heading in the direction you want it to, you're halfway to becoming a good golfer. After all, the aim of the game is to get the ball from the tee into the hole. This is where I concentrated my efforts for quite some time, which has made me a better golfer, and hopefully will help you, too.

Cro Cop Takes On Choi At Fields Dynamite

The bizarre career path taken by Croatian striking machine Mirko Cro Cop will continue on New Years Eve in Tokyo as he faces 72 Korean kickboxer Hong-Man Choi in what should be the final addition to the K-1/DREAM combined show called Fields Dynamite!.

For Cro Cop, its another stop on what has seemed like a meandering professional course full of much talk and little action since his departure from the UFC. In September 10, 2007, Cro Cop had just won PRIDE's Open Weight Grand Prix in dominant fashion. In the process, he defeated Wanderlei Silva and Josh Barnett on the same night and some were suggesting that he, and not Fedor Emelianenko, was the best heavyweight fighter in the world.

Cro Cops upset loss to Gabriel Gonzaga changed that and his career his never really recovered. In what was supposed to be a "tune up" bout, Gonzaga smothered Cro Cop and roughed him up on the ground before unleashing his own version of Cro Cop's signature kick. Mirko never saw it coming, and he crashed to the mat like he'd been shot with his leg folded awkwardly beneath him.

Since the loss to Gonzaga it has been almost impossible to keep up with the various twists and turns in Cro Cops career. After another UFC loss, this by unanimous decision to Cheick Kongo where Cro Cop looked listless and gun shy, his management announced that he had suffered a broken rib in the first round and was having trouble breathing. Tanikawas comments notwithstanding Choi is really the same as hes always been. Hes a physical mismatch for any opponent and while his striking style is awkward at best, it has proven to be reasonably effective. Not sure why Tanikawa is just now realizing that Choi isnt Ernesto Hoost, but hes a surprisingly skilled fighter who uses his unique physical attributes to their best advantage.

This fight isnt about competition as much as it is about commerce. Cro Cop remains one of the most popular foreign fighters in Japan, and with the proven success of freak show matchups this may have been the most attractive opponent for him from the promotions standpoint.

You need to follow this because things can change instantly once the flop hits the board.

If you have a good hand then it's normal for you to raise, but don't attempt a raise higher than 10% of your stack before the flop. The only exclusion would be having the said AAxx hand or a really steady KK/QQ hand (double suited or Broadway).

Having these hands, you can gamble less than 10% of your stack or you can also wage 50% of your chips. It really depends on the situation and the strength of your hand.

Reasons in Less Than 10% Bet

Betting less than 10% of your own stack to the pot will ensure you won't lose a lot when the flop is not that good with your hands. For instance, you are playing in $100 buy-in PLO game and you have a hole card of AsKsJdQc which is a strong hand.

If the flop turned out to be A, J and Q which is not the same suited card as yours - you can bet $7 which is not a bad stack to loss if ever you gave up your hand.

But if the pot is opened to $7 and you gained two callers - it's safe for you to re-raise your bet to $38 and then call with your current 3 pair and gut-shot to divide the pot. That time, the pot would be offering about $200 - 3 times more than your bet.

It is recommended that you don't bet 20%-40% of your stack before the flop is opened.

Why bet more than 50%?

On the other hand, if you possess a strong hand of AAxx or KK/QQ, you may want the pot heads-up and you need to have enough to bet a 50% pot flop bet which will eventually lead the others to fold until you're head to head with one opponent.

Then if you're already heads-up with someone it will be your job to raise and re-raise the pot till the turn or river till the other player gives up. Don't worry about getting head to head until the end because you have a pretty strong starting card to begin with which gives you advantage.
